Women With a Vision, Inc.

We at T’CHER would like to shine a bright light on a group who has dedicated 33 years to serve and giving back to the women of Greater New Orleans. Women With a Vision, Inc. is an amazing refuge for women—including women of trans experience—in need of help with the many struggles of life. If you need a shoulder to lean on, they are there with several to lend; or if you simply need direction, they will point you in the right direction. This group fights for equity, equality, and justice in our most vulnerable areas.

A grass root group of African American women founded this community-based nonprofit in 1989. It was 11 women of color that took up the fight for marginalized women when they noticed the face of HIV and AIDS beginning to change. This organization combined women’s health services with advocacy work to address social condition in the greater New Orleans area’s most vulnerable communities. Women With a Vision, Inc. uses their Harm Reduction program to supply needle supplies along with Narcan, condoms, lube, contraceptive guides, and Plan B—all of which is free. They also have a Diversion Program that helps to decriminalize sex work by advocating on behalf of women who cannot afford to navigate their way through the justice system. There is also the Voter Engagement Program that helps those in impoverished communities better understand voting rights and how to register to vote. They also help those women who need it with Food Stamp and Medicaid applications.

Women With a Vision, Inc. includes women of trans experience by being allies to the LGBTQIA+ community. They view women of trans experience as women that are an underserved part of this community’s population, and seek to provide their assistance when, where, and how they can. This organization treats all women with the dignity, respect, and inclusion they rightfully deserve. As a woman of trans experience who was unaware of this group of phenomenal individuals, they welcomed me with open arms, and provided me with assistance navigating the legal system. The huge victory achieved in the fight against the CANS (Crime Against Nature by Solicitation) movement helped all women including transgender women to be removed from the Louisiana sex offender registry. I am truly grateful to know that this organization is in the community and helps to fight for injustice in all forms.

Women With a Vision, Inc. is located in the Central City area of New Orleans at 2028 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., and can be found in their office Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To find out more information and learn more about the programs and services that this organization provides to the community, you can visit their website by clicking on the link provided below this post.
