Research Findings

New Orleans was one of seven sites across the country to undertake the Transgender Study. In this section we present findings from the two years of research performed in the New Orleans Statistical Area on the most significant challenges facing transgender women today.

“It’s a process. What I called myself three years ago may not be what I call myself today. Changing how you identify is okay.”

When we asked our participants how they describe their gender identity, most used the terms transgender woman (87%) and woman (39%)

However, many also identified with a wide range of other genders. 99% were assigned male at birth and identify with using these words individually or in combination with each other.
